Where are the Value Wines?

YECLA & JUMILLA, SPAIN

Monastrell (better known as Mourvèdre, the M in a GSM blend) originally comes from the Spanish regions of Yecla & Jumilla, south of Valencia and inland a bit. It’s dry and harsh with little organic matter in the soil. Perfect for this thick-skinned, red grape.

Monastrell produces a fuller-bodied, dry, red wine with lots of dark fruit flavors. Great with grilled meats! Stop by and check them out. You get a ton of wine for the money!!

Luzón Verde 2024 Monastrell • Jumilla, Spain • Reg $16.99 | Mixed Case $13.59

100% organic Monastrell. Aromas are intoxicating. Jens: smells like Northern Rhône to me. Dark raspberries, blackberries, dark olives, earth. Really, it smells like a Rhône. But the taste is different: blackberries, blueberries, dark plums. The acid is there! Makes this wine good for years. Finish is full of black raspberries with soft tannins. Great wine.

Bodegas Juan Gil 2023 Albacea Monastrell • Jumilla, Spain • Reg $16.99 | Mixed Case $13.59

100% organic Monastrell. Super inviting nose. Red & black plums, black raspberries, roasted herbs with a note of licorice. These are sunbaked grapes, and it shows up in a full, rich nose. Acidity kicks in from the beginning with flavors of plums, spicy blackberries, then dark cherries & spice on the finish. Winery says to pair with grilled vegetables, jamón Serrano, and grilled goat chops.

Gordo 2021 Monastrell • Yecla, Spain • Reg $22.99 | Mixed Case $18.39

100% Monastrell. A little pricier than the other two, but worth it: Herbal, earthy, dark fruit on the nose. Palate = blackberries, black plums, blueberries, herbal, black tea. Dry finish with a little, vibrant, orange rind acidity on the tail end. Crazy-good food wine. The wine you're getting for the money is insane.

SOUTH WEST FRANCE

The wine region of South West France is quite large in size, covering territory from the east of Bordeaux to Languedoc (outlined in blue) and south of Bordeaux (outlined in green) to the Pyrenees and the border to Spain.

Many smaller appellations are held within this larger territory, some of which are better known (Bergerac) and many are absolutely unknown in our market (Irouléguy??). We can add that many of the grapes grown in South West France are also local, indigenous varietals that you many have never heard of. Fun! And lots of wine for the money.

Let's go exploring:

Vignerons de Jurançon 2023 Yura Sec • Jurançon, France • Reg $23.99 | Mixed Case $19.19

Domaine des Geais 2020 Côtes du Marmandais • South West France • Reg $18.99 | Mixed Case $15.19

Marmandais is an appellation that borders Bordeaux to the southeast (pink on the map). This wine features the local grape Arbouriou which grows in clay & limestone hillsides and is then aged for a month in an amphora (pictured above with owner/winemaker Pascal Boissonneau), an ancient clay vessel used in winemaking and being revived today for the production of natural wines as it encouraged minimal intervention.

Local blend = Cabernet Sauvignon 50%, Syrah 24%, Arbouriou 15%, Merlot 5%. Certified organic & biodynamic. Color is dark, especially for 13% alcohol. Nose is herbal, earthy with intense dark fruit. Fuller-bodied. Blue- and blackberries on the palate. Fresh acidity. Finish is dry as a bone! (If you're curious what that means? This is your wine!)  A European jewel — made for dinner: lamb, beef, aged cheeses.
