WINE OF THE MONTH
Every month we give a little spotlight time to a hidden treasure, a wine we think you should meet (and hopefully fall in love with). To encourage the introduction, we offer the wine at 25% OFF the bottle price for the given month.
Breca 2022 Garnacha El Nacido •Calatayud, Spain • Reg $21.99 | 25% OFF = $16.49
100% Garnacha. Estate old vines pictured. Big nose of red plums & earth. Complex. Flavors curve around a little bit... back to traditional Grenache: strawberries, raspberries, plums, red cherries. But not a fruit bomb. Complex. Thoughtful. Long finish. Killer wine.
JENS’ TOP PICKS
Every month Portalis owner Jens Strecker picks 8-12 wines that he thinks are outstanding … for any reason he chooses. Here are his January Picks — made with cold, rainy, dark days in mind.
The Pathfinder NA Spirit • Reg $42.99 |Mixed Case $34.39
You’ve been asking for it, so here it is… one of our non-alcoholic selections in the shop — “destroyer of bad vibes positively!” Made from fermented hemp then blended with botanicals: wormwood, angelica root, ginger, sage, juniper, saffron, orange peel and wild-crafted Douglas-fir. You can serve it neat, on the rocks with a twist, add a shot to ginger beer, or make a low-alcohol or non-alcohol cocktail.
Sainte-Marie 2022 Vieilles Vignes Bourgogne Blanc • Burgundy, France • Reg $29.99 | Mixed Case $23.99
100% Chardonnay. Flowers and minerals (water over rocks) with a little note of apple, pear & spice. Bosc pears, yellow apples, yellow plums on the palate. Flavorful but not heavy. Citrus on the long, delicious finish. No oak. All fruit. Wonderful wine. Jean-Marc Brocard (Chablis producer who we also carry in the shop) makes this wine for importer Kysela Pere et Fils.
Chateau Rozier 2022 Saint-Emilion Grand Cru • Bordeaux, France • Reg $36.99 | Mixed Case $23.99
Importer notes: Château Rozier is situated at the foot of the hillside of the same name, which pays homage to the Abbot Rozier, who in 1760 wrote one of the first manuals on modern viticulture. The Saby family has been making wine on this estate for nine generations.
Blend = 80% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. 12 months in new and used French oak barrels. Deep purple color, the flavors have red & black fruits, with a woody and slight vanilla edge. The tannin gives it a fleshy, smooth and delicious yet elegant finish.
Villa Maria 2020 Private Bin Pinot Noir • Marlborough, New Zealand • Reg $19.99 | Mixed Case $15.99
100% Pinot Noir. Nose is full of cherries — dark and red, black raspberries, earthy herbal notes. Medium-bodied. Vibrant finish. Fun food wine.
Kellerei Bozen 2024 St-Magdalener Huck am Bach • Alto Adige, Italy • Reg $26.99 | Mixed Case $21.59
Schiava-Lagrein blend. Soft spice, earthiness, softer herbal on the nose. The nose turns you on, makes you want more. Red and dark plums on the palate with herbal nuances. Soft acidity. Note of earth & blackberry on the finish. That wine is absolutely unbelievable. Just a soft wine all the way through.
Palacio del Burgo 2022 Tinto • Rioja, Spain • Reg $17.99 | Mixed Case $14.39
100% Tempranillo — 35% in neutral oak. (Tinto just means dry, red wine.) Nose of fine herbs, plums, black cherries. Smooth. Well-balanced. Flavors add in blackberries at the end. Soft acidity. A little spiciness on the finish. Truly a delicious wine. The winery suggests enjoying this wine with the traditional cured meats of Spain. Also great with roasted turkey dinner! Drink now to 3 years.
Lobo Hills 2024 Sauvignon Blanc • Yakima Valley, Washington • Reg $23.99 | Mixed Case $19.19
100% Sauvignon Blanc. Here's what owner/winemaker Tony Dollar has to say about this wine: "The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc lifts with aromas of Fuji apples, ruby grapefruit and honeydew melon. The mouthfeel is carefully balanced with food-friendly acidity and flavors of gooseberries, green apples, pineapple and hay.
Métier 2022 Red Blend • Columbia Valley, Washington • Reg $23.99 | Mixed Case $19.19
A fun, untraditional blend of Syrah, Cab & Merlot. Blackberries & earth on the nose. Flavors of blackberries, dark plums. Spicy. Good structure on the finish. Good acidity. Medium-body. Great wine for the price! Made by DeLille Cellars.
Jean-François Mérieau 2022 Gamay • Loire Valley, France • Reg $29.99 | Mixed Case $23.99
100% Gamay from Touraine AOC. Dark cherries, dark raspberries, soft earthy notes, faint note of nutmeg. Very intriguing nose. Perfect acidity. Flavors add in soft cranberries, pomegranate, with more soft, earthy, spicy notes. Finish is smooth. Absolutely great food wine. Organic. I think this wine is phenomenal. Perfect pairing for a Thanksgiving turkey dinner with stuffing and cranberry relish.
